Development of the National Strategy for Sustainable Land Management (SLM), and Training of Public Sector Decision and Policy Makers in Iraq on SLM 

Awar Water Executive Director, Dr. Faraj El Awar, was contracted by the FAO Iraq Country Office to develop a national strategy for sustainable land management (SLM), in addition to an action plan for natural resources conservation and agricultural development in the marshlands region (Al Ahwar) in Iraqi Southern regions. Dr. El Awar was also tasked by the FAO Iraq Country Office to develop training material and train staff members of the Iraqi public sector, at the decision and policy makers level, on sustainable land management.

Field Pilot: Leak Detection and Fixing for Physical NRW reduction

This project was a follow up to the “Sustainable Management of Non-Revenue Water” project, which provided to the beneficiary regional water establishments in Lebanon (Bekaa, North Lebanon, and South Lebanon Water Establishments) the needed technical basis for non-revenue water (NRW) management (network GIS maps, hydraulic models, and calculated NRW levels through water accounting). The project main objective was to demonstrate in the field the whole process of isolation of DMAs, as well as leak detection and fixing, as a means of physical NRW reduction.

Supporting Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM), Sustainable Land Management (SLM), and Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) in Turkey and Central Asia

Awar Water Executive Director, Dr. Faraj El Awar, was contracted by the FAO Sub-Regional Office for Central Asia (FAO-SEC) for an 11-month consultancy assignment as Senior Land and Water Specialist over the period of January – December 2022. Within this assignment, Dr. El Awar led all the FAO-SEC land and water initiatives through which the regional office provides assistance to the countries of the region in developing policies, programmes, best practices and tools in the fields of water governance, rainfed agriculture, irrigation and drainage, soil conservation, sustainable land management practices, land degradation neutrality, drought mitigation, water rights, access to natural resources, and climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Sustainable Communities: Eco-Innovative Economic Growth 

Upon request by UNDP, Iraq Office, our Executive Director, Dr. Faraj El Awar contributed to the drafting of the Joint Programme (JP) entitled “Sustainable Communities: Eco-Innovative Economic Growth” that was presented by the Iraq Offices of UNDP, UNICEF, IOM, and FAO to the UN SDG Fund. The purpose of the JP was to accelerate implementation of SDGs in Iraq, with priority given to the sectors of renewable energy, agriculture, and water security, especially in underserved and conflict-affected regions.

Sustainable Management of Non-Revenue Water

A team of Awar Water experts, led by our Executive Director Dr. Faraj El Awar, provided their consulting services to three Lebanese water utilities in support of their efforts for sustainable management of Non-Revenue Water (NRW) within the towns of Nabi Osman, Moqraq-Toufiqiye, Zabboud-Bejjeje and Nasrieh in Bekaa, Fouar in North Lebanon, and Bint Jbeil in South Lebanon. The project, which supported the institutional and staff capacities of the Bekaa, North Lebanon, and South Lebanon Water Establishments (SLWE/NLWE/BWE) in NRW management, was funded by GVC- WeWorld.

The State of the World’s Land and Water Resources for Food and Agriculture (SOLAW)

The Executive Director, Dr. Faraj El Awar, contributed to the second edition of FAO flagship publication entitled “The State of the World’s Land and Water Resources for Food and Agriculture (SOLAW),” which is published every ten years. The periodical publication provides a review of changes in land and water resources state globally and establishes a baseline of the driving forces, pressures, impacts, and options of response that are available to development practitioners and policy makers.

Training on Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) in Lebanon

Upon request by the FAO Lebanon Country Office, Awar Water Executive Director, Dr. Faraj El Awar, developed the training curriculum material and delivered the training on IWRM to the higher and mid-management staff of the North Lebanon Water Establishment (NLWE), the regional water and sanitation utility of the North Lebanon Muhafazat.

Verification of the Government of Jordan Benchmarks for Water Sector Reform

Awar Water Executive Director, Dr. Faraj El Awar, was contracted by DEXIS International Consultants as water sector reform expert of the Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) Verification Team tasked with measuring and verifying the progress of water and public sector reform by the Government of Jordan (GOJ) against benchmarks for specific indicators. Dr. El Awar led the assessment and verification of Government of Jordan’s fulfilment of the benchmark targets of non-revenue water (NRW) reduction and water tariff reform.

Water Sector Governance in Lebanon: Potential Role of Local Governments

Awar Water Executive Director, Dr. Faraj El Awar, provided his advisory services to DRI – International and executed a project focused on research and analysis of water governance in Lebanon. The main project objective was to analyze the governance structures of the Lebanese water sector with special focus on the potential role of local governments in the provision of water and sanitation services and water resources management at local level.

Water, Sanitation, and Conservation – Lebanon – 2020

Upon request from RTI-International for his advisory services, our Executive Director, Dr. Faraj El Awar, contributed to a project document (proposal) entitled “Water, Sanitation, and Conservation” (WSC), which was prepared by the consortium comprised of RTI-International, CDM-Smith, and DAR-Lebanon, in response to a request for proposals (RFP) by USAID/Lebanon in support of the Lebanese water and sanitation sector.
